The Wall. A run on the wild side. A long run. A very long run.
The Wall is Hadrian’s Wall. A Wall perhaps heard of but not visited. Imagined but not studied. It’s been there a long time and now we present Wall Country for your running adventure. For almost 2,000 years this vast Roman construction has stretched across the wild beauty of Northern England, and is now a UNESCO World Heritage site. Of course, it is no longer the ancient Frontier of the Roman Empire, though the history of that period is incredibly well presented at many locations, with sections of real wall and real forts, milecastles and Roman temples to accompany you along the way. It is bound evocatively together by the stunning countryside of Cumbria and Northumberland, rising from the lowlands of the West into the rugged hill country of Northumberland National Park before descending gently to the banks of the River Tyne.
The concept is simple: You will run (or walk) from Carlisle Castle to the Gateshead Millennium Bridge. You could call this City to City, Coast To Coast or Castle to Castle. That’s up to you. We call it The Wall. 65 miles* from start to finish. 65 miles in 2 days, or for those that want to rule with endurance – in one continuous journey. This event will raise the standard of aspiration and endurance running in Europe and will mix the qualities of great cities and stunning countryside all into the one event. And if you want to celebrate your achievement in style, you can’t beat a night out in Newcastle.
*This distance is subject to slight variation as final detailed routings are determined.
The Wall categories
We have devised The Wall to be achievable and attractive to runners and fit walkers alike. This is one reason why we start in Carlisle and finish in Gateshead (the complete Wall Path is longer). The route is the culmination of many years research and exclusive permissions will be in place to allow you the true experience of The Wall. The route will be fully waymarked and safety systems are in place to ensure the very best support for you along the length of your journey. You can book a coach seat with us for your return to Carlisle, and there are train options that you may investigate for return or onwards travel.
These are the three run categories;
Challenger (Solo):
The Challenger is for the everyday runner who is prepared to up their game to the marathon+ level, for two days of solid running back-to-back over the Saturday and Sunday. The Challengers will have a fully serviced overnight camp in a stunning location in the central section of the Hadrian’s Wall corridor near the famous forts of Housesteads and Vindolanda. Challengers could also be fit walkers. The real bonus of this category is that we will transfer your kit (and camping kit) onwards from start, to overnight, to finish. It is thus a fully supported route.
