Cumbria Virtual Way Ultra 2020
This is an opportunity to virtually run, walk, stagger or crawl the 73 or 30 miles of the Cumbria Way Ultra or Cumbria Way Ultra 30 routes over 10 days, either as a single 73 mile or 30 mile run or a series of shorter distances totalling 73/30 miles.
We will be following current UK Government guidelines regarding exercise for the period of the ‘race’. As this is a virtual event, we are relying on participants’ ‘honesty’ (more on that later) to log your miles, whether run/walked in the great outdoors or on a treadmill, as accurately as possible, and have some much needed fun along the way.
The event starts at Midnight on Thursday 10th September and ends at Midnight on Saturday 20th September. Participants have a maximum of 10 days to complete either the 73 mile or 30 mile distances.
Now for the techy bit or ‘how will it work?’
You can complete the total 73 mile distance in a single, continuous run/walk (to do so enter the CWU Oner category) or choose to break down the total 73 mile event distance to run/walk one checkpoint at a time (enter the CWU CP category).
If 73 miles seems a long way (and let’s face it, it is) then enter the CWU 30 event, again this can be completed as a single, continuous run/walk (to do so enter the CWU 30 Oner), or choose to break down the total 30 mile event distance to run/walk one checkpoint at a time (enter the CWU 30 CP category).
Fancy taking part as a Team with your friends or family? Then choose the Relay option and complete the 73 mile distance as a relay with each leg being the CP distances (minimum of 3 people per team).
If you choose either of the CP Categories or the Relay option then each leg can be completed in any way you choose; either a single, continuous run/walk or any number of run/walks to total each leg distance. Once you’ve completed all of the CP legs, you will have completed the total event distance.
By spreading out the distance over a number of days and including the Relay option we hope to include not only our seasoned CWU ultra runners, but also encourage new runners, friends and family members to get involved.

Coniston 16.1 miles/26 km

Keswick 16.7 miles/29.6 km

Dalston 10 miles/16.1 km

Total 30.4 miles/48.78 km
After you’ve completed either your single, continuous 73 or 30 mile run/walk or a Checkpoint Leg, please return to SiEntries and EDIT your Entry so that you can record your time for the run/leg. Relay Team Captains are responsible for uploading their Team’s results. Your cumulative time and position will be recorded by SIEntries on the Results Leaderboard so you can check out your progress…
You are responsible for uploading your times to the SIEntries website, all times must be posted by midnight on Sunday 20th September.
There will be a Cumbria Virtual Way Ultra Strava group, and you’ll be able to add your Strava id to your SI Entry. If you’re feeling competitive and fancy trying for one of our prizes, you will need to provide gpx evidence of your distance.
Prizes
We’ll have a number of Spot Prizes (thanks to our sponsors Raidlight UK and Mountain Fuel) with some random prize categories, including;
Fastest Finisher (Oner and CP categories)
The Golden CWU ticket. Picked at random, a free entry to a future CWU.
Best Finish pic. We think we have a pretty good finish line at Carlisle Castle, running under the portcullis to be presented with your medal and CWU bottle of beer! So, where will you finish? Show us your pics!
Please tag us on facebook, twitter or Instagram using the hashtag #cumbriavirtualwayultra2020. Show us your journey along the Virtual Cumbria Way! We’ll have Spot Prizes for the best pics/posts shared over the event period.
Minimum age for entering either the CWU or CWU 30 Oner continuous runs is 18 years, but the CP/Relay events are open to all ages, although under 15’s should be accompanied by an adult, and we would advise that each run/walk be kept to a 3 mile/5km maximum distance.
Every participant will receive an oak medal, made locally in the north Lakes, plus there’ll be options to purchase CWU headtubes @ £10 and Cumbria Virtual Way Ultra technical vests or t shirts (men’s and ladies fit) @ £15 during the entry process. These will be posted out after the 20th September.

10% of all entry fees will be donated to Fix The Fells, National Trust Registered Charity 205846
