The race is one of the attractions at the Lakeland Country Fair, held annually on the 3rd Sunday in August at Torver (near Coniston) in the Lake District. The race takes the runners from Torver to the summit of Coniston Old Man and back, a total of approximately 11 km, and is a very popular fixture. The route is marked at the beginning but after that runners are free to take their own line to the top. There is also a full programme of junior races. Many competitors bring family members who can enjoy all the attractions at the show.
