Race Description

Prize money has been raised to P180 000, from an initial P120 000, making this one of the marathons in Southern Africa with the highest prize money. The increased prize money will give P25 000 to the winner, P15 000 to second and R10 000 to third. Official insurance sponsor of the event, BIHL Insurance Company, has also pledged P10 000 prize money for the fastest Motswana male and female marathon runner.

This race is a qualifier for both the 2012 Olympic Games and Comrades. It is hoped that the race will attract international athletes. The marathon starts and ends at the Phakalane Golf Estate, north east of the capital, Gaborone. Runners will follow the A1 Highway, south west and towards Gaborone. An anti-clockwise route through the city passes the state-of-the-art Diamond Technology Park and Gaborone City Centre. Both the 10km & 4km route take runners around the Phakalane Golf Estate.

A variety of food and entertainment awaits runners at the finish.

The event was founded by PGM, an organization which aims to empower people through sporting and cultural events in Botswana. It is sponsored by Steinmetz Diamonds, whose passion for sport and innovation was reflected in their sponsorship of Team Vodafone McClaren Mercedes, in Formula 1, since 2003.

Major Sponsors include Standard Chartered Bank, Richold SA, Phakalane Estates, Leo Schachter Diamonds and GIA (Gemological Institute of America).

The event supports the following charities: Lady Khama Charitable Trust, Moremogolo Trust, Mothers for All, Seeing is Believing and Y Care Trust.
