Race Description

Llanwrtyd Wells, may be the smallest town in the UK but there’s always something going on and its location in a river valley alongside The River Irfon makes it and the surrounding mountain scenery spectacular! A great location for an early autumn fell run and all for a good cause too.

When a great man comes along and works tirelessly to support the economy of a small community such as Llanwrtyd Wells, it seems appropriate to remember him in a fitting way. Mr Ron Skilton was a co-founder and the Treasurer of Green Events Ltd, and, in his younger days, was an avid runner and cyclist. Green Events is a not for profit organisation responsible for some of the more unusual events you may have heard of such as Bog Snorkelling and Man v Horse Marathon.

So when Ron passed away in 2005 after a battle with Motor Neurone Disease it seemed only appropriate to remember him by starting up an event in his honour and also aim to raise money for MNDA and their research programme.

Now in its 7th year, the Ron Skilton Memorial Half Marathon will take place on Sunday 21st October, starting 11am, starting in the town square of Llanwrtyd Wells and taking in some of the magnificent surrounding landscape. The run is approx 13 miles, with almost 3000 feet of ascent and descent, designed in a figure of eight through fields and along tracks and bridal ways, very little of the course is on road. It is open to individual runners and two-person relay teams. ENTRIES ARE ACCEPTED ON THE DAY, so don’t worry if you haven’t pre-booked.

Event Co-ordinator, John Crompton was also Ron’s next door neighbour, “This is such a “fun” event to organise. It has a great family feel about it, starting and finishing in the Town Square and culminating with tea and sandwiches and an informal prize giving in the local pub after the event. What I enjoy most is that every year it has become the perfect excuse for the Skilton family to all get together. This year over 30 Skilton’s are joining us and will be out along the course providing their services as Marshals”

Come along and join in. Make a difference in the fight against Motor Neurone Disease.
